Scripture Reading: John 6:37-40

The Will of the Father

 

Intro.

1.  Will: Determination, choice, inclination.

2.  Jesus did the will of the Father, John 5:30.

  a.  Note the distinction between “my will” and the Father’s will.

  b.  Doing the Father’s will is doing what pleases Him, John 8:29.

3.  Those who do the will of the Father:

  a.  Are in a relationship with Jesus, Matt. 12:50.

  b.  Enter the kingdom of heaven, Matt. 7:21-23.

4.  What is the will of the Father for you, the church, and the world?

 

I.  THE FATHER’S WILL IS THAT YOU BE SAVED IN HIS SON, John 6:37-40.

  A.  His Plan of Salvation is Simple to Understand but Requires Faith to Follow, Matt. 7:21.

    1.    God’s will that we remain faithful, John 6:39.

    2.    God’s will that every believer will be saved and raised, John 6:40.

  B.  Count the Cost and Pay the Price of Salvation, Luke 14:25-35.

  C.  What Hinders You From Being Baptized? Acts 8:36

    1.  Surrender your will to His, 2 Kings 5:8-14.

    2.  Must have a broken heart (contrite spirit), Ps. 34:18; Acts 2:38.

 

II.  THE FATHER’S WILL IS THAT THE CHURCH LIVE IN THE HARMONY AND BLESSINGS OF HIS TRUTH, Eph. 1:7-11; 2:11-18.

  A.  God’s Will in Christ: Christians Are Redeemed and Gathered into One Body (Church) and Have Obtained an Inheritance, 1:7-11.

    1.  God’s will is that in Christ, we will be reconciled to Him and each other in one body (the church), Eph. 2:13-16, 17-18.

    2.  Guard our unity in Christ (His church), Eph. 4:4-5.

  B.  Be Obedient to Him and Be His Children, Mark 3:31-35.

 

III.  THE FATHER’S WILL FOR THE WORLD IS ITS SALVATION THROUGH OBEDIENCE TO THE FAITH, John 3:16; 1 Tim. 2:3-4.

  A.  Requires Gospel Preaching, Rom. 10:12-17.

      -This requires not causing souls to stumble, Matt. 18:14 (10-14).

  B.  Who Will Go and Teach? Isa. 6:6-8 (1 Sam. 3:10); Acts 8:4

  C.  Urgency is Vital Because This World Will End, 2 Pet. 3:9-13 (James 4:13-17).

 

Conclusion

1.  Must put the Father’s will into our hearts for it to become our will, Heb. 8:10 (Col. 3:16).

2.  The Father’s will becomes our daily prayer and purpose, Matt. 6:10.

3.  Jesus learned to do the Father’s will through suffering, Heb. 5:7-8.

    -We would be lost without Christ’s obedience to the Father’s will.

4.  This is the will of the Father: That we obey Jesus and be saved, Heb. 5:9.
