WATCHMEN IN ZION

Intro.

1.  Recent tornadoes that did untold damage and loss of life. Early warning systems help protect (weather warnings, storm spotters, alarms).

2.  Are there watchmen in Zion today? Should there be? If so, who are they? How do we react to them and the work they do? Is it scriptural to describe Christians as watchmen? Are you are watchman?

I.   WATCHMEN IN THE OLD TESTAMENT.

   A.  OT Written for Our Learning (Rom. 15:4).

      1.   Wise unto salvation in Christ (2 Tim. 3:15).

      2.   Its examples admonish us to avoid sin and live faithfully (1 Cor. 10:6-12).

   B.  In the OT, God Likened the Work of His Prophets to That of Watchmen.

      1.   A watchman:

         a.   Positioned on city wall to watch and report what he saw – 2 Sam. 18:24.

         b.   His report could be an assessment of what he saw, or a warning based upon what he saw – 2 Sam. 18:25-27 (2 Kgs. 9:17-20).  He could recognize friend and foe.

         c.   Stationed on the wall of a city, watching and warning of approaching danger or friends.

      2.   God used this common practice to teach His truth to Israel and surrounding nations (Prophets were God’s watchmen):

         a.   Isa. 21:6 – Announced fall of Babylon and Edom (“Go, set a watchman, Let him declare what he sees,” cf. Isa. 21:6-9; 11-12).

         b.   Jer. 6:17 – God set watchmen over Israel and Judah who warned them of their sins.

         c.   Ezek. 3:17; 33:7 – Ezekiel a specific example of a watchmen from and for God.

      3.   Israel fell into judgment for her sins because she failed to heed the warnings God’s watchmen gave – Jer. 6:16-19 (7:16-27).  (Assyria and Babylon invasions and exiles.)

      4.   If watchmen failed to speak God’s word of warning:

         a.   They were held guilty, too. – Ezek. 3:18, 20; 33:8

         b.   Such were useless to the Lord and His people – Isa. 56:10 ("His watchmen are blind, they are all without knowledge; they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; dreaming, lying down, loving to slumber").

II.   WATCHMEN ON THE WALLS OF ZION.

   A.  Messiah’s Kingdom, the Church of Christ, is Mount Zion, the City of the Living God – Heb. 12:22-23; Gal. 4:25-26.

   B.  God Has Placed Watchmen on the Walls of Zion (the church, Messiah’s kingdom).

      1.   Isa. 62:1-2, 6-7 – They shall never hold their peace.

III.  CHRIST HAS SET WATCHMEN IN HIS CHURCH.

-It is scripturally right for us to use the term watchman when speaking of those who preach and teach the gospel.

-The NT establishes both the need of every saint to be watchful and the work of those to whom Christ has given particular responsibility as watchmen.  (cf. Severe weather watchers)
