There is Good News!

 

Intro.

1.  There’s a lot of bad news in the world. Always has been…will be.

2.  Jesus preached a gospel of healing, liberty, and God’s favor, Lk. 4:18-19 (Isa. 61:1-2). There is good news!

3.  Great commission: Preach this good news to everyone, Mk. 16:15; Matt. 28:19-20 (1 Cor. 15:1-4).

 

I.  WHAT IS THE GOSPEL?

  A.  Facts to Believe, 1 Cor. 15:1-4 (Acts 2:21-36). Jno. 20:30-31

  B.  Commands to Obey, Acts 17:30; 10:48 (34-35); Rom. 6:17-18.

  C.  Promises to Receive, Matt. 28:20; 2 Tim. 4:8; 1 Pet. 1:8-9 (3-5).

 

II.  THE GOOD NEWS (THE GOSPEL), Col. 1:5.

  A.  The Gospel is Good News of Truth, Col. 1:5. Jno. 14:6 (God’s)

    1.  Truth of the gospel must continue with us, Gal. 2:5.

    2.  Truth of the gospel produces a straight (upright) walk towards God; “to walk in a straight course; metaph. to act uprightly” (Thayer, 452). [orthopodeo, Gal. 2:14 (cf. orthopedic, orthotics)]

    3.  Truth of gospel produces trust (faith), Eph. 1:13 (Rom. 10:17).

    4.  Truth is universal (Mk. 16:15), objective (Acts 10:34-35), constant (Matt. 24:35), absolute (Jno. 17:17).

  B.  The Gospel is Good News of God’s Grace, Col. 1:6 (Rom. 3:21-24).

    1.  The apostles’ words testify of this grace, Acts 20:24.

    2.  Grace appeared in Christ and teaches by His gospel, Tit. 2:11-12.

    3.  By faith (gospel produced) we stand in grace, Rom. 5:1-2.

    4.  Different gospels turn souls away from grace of Christ, Gal. 1:6.

 C.  The Gospel is Good News of Salvation, Eph. 1:13 (Acts 11:14; 2:38-39).

    1.  Deliverance from sin, Rom. 6:17 (6-7; 11-12, 21-23).

    2.  Deliverance from death, Jno. 11:23-27 (physical and spiritual); 5:24-27.

  D.  The Gospel (Good News) is God’s Power:

    1.  To save, 1 Thess. 2:13; Rom. 1:16. (heal, liberty, Isa. 61:1-2)

    2.  To strengthen, Acts 20:32; Col. 1:9-11.

    3.  To give hope to the hopeless, Col. 1:5, 23 (saved in hope, Rom. 8:24-25).

 

Conclusion

1.  The gospel is for all because Christ died is for all, 2 Cor. 5:14-15.

2.  Relationship with Christ begins and is sustained through His gospel, 1 Jno. 1:1-4.
