Scriptures for the Supper
Intro.
1. Important to “prepare our minds” to eat the Lord’s supper (cf. 1 Cor. 20-21, 27-28).
2. We not only sing a song about the Lord’s death, we generally read a Scripture.
3. 1 Cor. 11:23-28 is often read, and for good reason.
4. Offer some additional Scriptures we can read at the table as we set our minds on His death. Encourage you to add to this list.
I. PROPHECIES OF HIS DEATH.
A. Rejected by Men, but not by God – Psa. 22:1, 6-21.
B. Hated & Reproached – Psa. 69:4, 7-9, 19-21.
C. God’s Suffering Servant, Isa. 53.
1. His humiliation, 53:3-9 (cf. Acts 8:32-33).
2. His accomplishment, 53:10-12.
II. HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS.
A. The Supper Instituted – Matt. 26:26-29.
B. In the Garden of Gethsemane – Matt. 26:36-46.
C. Betrayal & Arrest, Denial, Trials, Scourging & Mockery – Lk. 22:47-23:25.
D. The Crucifixion – Lk. 23:26-49.
E. The Resurrection – Mk. 16:1-8.
III. REASONS FOR CHRIST’S DEATH.
A. Sin, Suffering & Salvation – 1 Pet. 2:19-25.
1. Our sin…His suffering…our salvation.

IV. OUR FAITH IN CHRIST’S DEATH.
A. God is for us – Rom. 8:31-39.
B. Hold Fast our Confession – Heb. 4:11-16.
V. RESULTS OF HIS DEATH.
A. Eternal Redemption & New Covenant – Heb. 9:11-16.
B. Reconciliation – 2 Cor. 5:17-21.
Conclusion
1. Jno. 12:27-33 – In His death, Jesus…
a. Fulfilled the purposes of God, 12:27.
b. Glorified the Father, 12:28.
c. Cast out Satan, 12:31 (Heb. 2:14).
d. Became the source of salvation for all people, 12:32-33.
2. We should never forget! The supper helps us to always remember.
3. Jno. 12:34-36 – We have the light…walk in the light…become sons of light.
