Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:5-11

Son of Man and Son of God

Intro.

1.  Jesus is unique (“only begotten of the Father”), Jno. 1:14, 18.

2.  He is completely human and completely deity, Col. 2:9.

3.  Incorrect to say that the Son “gave up His deity” to come to earth.

4.  Correctly see that the Son gave up the glory of deity to become human (added humanity; became flesh), Phil. 2:5-11; Jno. 17:5.

  a.  Form (6, 7) (morphe): “the form by which a person or thing strikes the vision; the external appearance” (Thayer, 418). (v. 8; Mk. 16:12)

  b.  Did not think it robbery (6): Plunder, something to cling to, prize.

  c.  Equal with God (6): Context: Same in “form” and glory (Jno. 17:5), Phil. 2:7 (contrast, “likeness of men”).

  d.  Made Himself of no reputation (7): Context: Emptied Himself of deity’s appearance (not of deity’s nature) and became a man. Jesus gave up looking like God to become a man; did not give up being God.

  e.  Mt. of Transfiguration: They saw His majesty, 2 Pet. 1:16-17.

5.  Jesus is both the son of Adam and the son of God, Lk. 3:38. This is the miracle of His incarnation.

I.  JESUS: THE ONLY BEGOTTEN OF THE FATHER, Jno. 1:14, 18; 3:16.

  A.  Son of God: Deity, Jno. 1:34; Heb. 1:1-2.

    1.  Sent by (came from) the Father, Jno. 8:42 (26, 23); 17:3.

    2.  Eternally with the Father, Jno. 17:5 (1:1).

    3.  Same nature as Father, Jno. 1:1 (Heb. 1:3, “son of”); 5:18; 10:30, 33, 36.

  B.  Son of Man: Humanity, Gen. 3:15; 22:18; 2 Sam. 7:12; Lk. 2:4-7.

    1.    Jesus was born of woman, Gal. 4:4.

    2.    Jesus was the seed of Abraham and son of David, Matt. 1:1.

  C.  Only Jesus is both Man and God.

    1.  Mary’s son and God’s Son, Lk. 1:31-32, 35.

    2.  Adam’s son and God’s Son, Lk. 3:38; Gal. 4:4.

    3.  David’s son and God’s Son, 2 Sam. 7:12-14.

    4.  David’s son and God’s Son, Matt. 22:42-45.

II.  WHAT THIS TELLS US ABOUT JESUS.

  A.  Because He was Man, He Lived a Physical Life, Heb. 2:14, 17; 4:15.

 B.  Because He was God, He Exercised Power Over the Physical World, Matt. 11:4-5; Jno. 4:46-54; 20:30-31.

SON OF MAN (Heb. 2:5-8, 14)

SON OF GOD (Heb. 1:1-2)

Lived within the confines of--

Exists outside the confines of--

  -Time, Jno. 9:4

  -Time, Jno. 2:7-9

  -Space, Jno. 2:12-13

  -Space, Jno. 6:21

-Physical activities (eat, thirst, etc.),  Jno. 4:7-8, 31

-Physical forces suspended, Matt. 14:26, 32-33

-Death (pain and death), Phil. 2:8

-Overcame death, Acts 2:24; Rom. 1:4

III. WHAT THIS MEANS TO US.

  A.  Hebrews 1: Son of God (Deity). [So we can live, 1 Jno. 4:9]

    1.  Must listen to the Son of God (1-4).

    2.  Must worship the Son of God (5-9).

    3.  Must obey the Son of God (10-14).

  B.  Hebrews 2: Son of Man (Humanity). [Perfect offering, Heb. 5:8-9]

    1.  Must not neglect His salvation (3).

    2.  Must submit to His authority because of His exalted position and His suffering of death (5-9).

    3.  Must follow Him (10-13).

    4.  Must rely on Him as brother, Savior and High Priest (14-18).

Conclusion

1.  Our faith is in Immanuel (God with us), who was tempted, but did not sin. Who died and rose from the dead. Who is exalted in glory. Who is “equal with God” and who is the great I AM. 1 Tim. 3:16

2.  Except we believe this, we will die in our sins, Jno. 8:23-24.
