Scripture Reading: Hebrews 9:23-28

Shall I Crucify My Savior?

 

Intro.

1.  Jesus lived in order to die, John 10:17-18.

2.  Jesus suffered and died once for our sins, Heb. 9:28; 1 Pet. 3:18; 2:21.

3.  By His stripes, we are healed, 1 Pet. 2:24.

4.  When we choose to practice sin, we choose to crucify Him again, putting Him to an open shame, Heb. 6:4-6; 10:26-29 (1 Cor. 11:27).

5.  Consider the sins that crucified our Lord: To examine ourselves, lest we crucify our Lord (1 Cor. 10:12; 2 Cor. 13:5).

 

I.  SINS THAT CRUCIFIED OUR LORD. (Barnes’ Bible Charts)

  A.  The Sin of Ignorance, Acts 3:17 (1 Cor. 2:7-8). cf. Eph. 4:17-24, 11-16; 5:17; 2 Tim. 2:15.

  B.  The Sin of Hate, Matt. 27:20. John 15:18, 23-25 (Psa. 69:4).

  C.  The Sin of Jealousy, Mark 15:10; Envy, Matt. 27:17-18.

    1.  Envy: Ill will produced by the blessings and achievements of others” (Vine), Gal. 5:21; Titus 3:3. (1 Pet. 2:1)

    2.  Jealousy: Spite, rage, Rom. 13:13; James 3:14.

    3.  “The distinction lies in this, that envy desires to deprive another of what he has, jealousy desires to have the same or the same sort of thing for itself” (Vine).

  D.  The Sin of Neglect, John 5:39-40. Be diligent, Heb. 2:3; 4:11 (3:14).

  E.  The Sin of Unbelief, John 1:11 (12). Luke 20:13-19; Heb. 3:12

  F.  The Sin of Selfishness, Matt. 26:14-16.

    1.  Selfish greed of Judas; Sin is always selfish!

    2.  cf. Fornication, 1 Thess. 4:3-6; Stealing; lying, omissions, etc.

  G.  The Sin of Revenge, Matt. 15:9 (12).

    1.  Retaliation for wrong (or perceived wrong, as in this case).

    2.  Revenge is driven by self-vindication, not love, cf. Matt. 21:45-46.

  H.  The Sin of Lying, Mark 15:30-31 (14:55-59). Eph. 4:25 (Prov. 6:19)

  I.  The Sin of Hypocrisy, Acts 1:15-20 (Judas, Luke 22:47-48).

    1.  Play-acting, pretense; form of lying, cf. Mark 12:13-15; 1 Tim. 4:2.

    2.  Wisdom from above is impartial and sincere (genuine), James 3:17.

  J.  The Sin of Rejection, John 5:40; Isa. 53:3.

    1.  Shows unwillingness to come to Christ (40), and unbelief (45-47).

    2.  Forsake Jesus when we refuse His words (47), Heb. 12:25.

    3.  Rejecting Jesus means rejecting eternal life.

  K.  The Sin of Denial, Acts 3:14.

    1.  To contradict and refuse heaven’s offer: Abundant life, John 10:10.

    2.  When we refuse His salvation we join with His murderers.

 

Conclusion

1.  Jesus died to heal us from our sins and bring us to God, 1 Pet. 2:24; 3:18.

2.  Shall I crucify my Savior by committing the same sorts of sins that put Him on the tree?
