Scripture Reading: Acts 10:34-43
"He Commanded Us To Preach"
Intro.
1. When we examine the preaching of the apostles in the book of Acts we are impressed by what they do not preach and by what they do preach.
a. Preach (kerusso): To herald, announce, proclaim, publish (Acts 8:5).
b. Preach (euangelizo): Proclaim good news (Rom. 1:15).
2. They did not preach: Themselves (2 Cor. 4:5), to please men (1 Thess. 2:4; Gal. 1:10), human wisdom (1 Cor. 2:4; Gal. 1:11), personal opinions (1 Cor. 9:19-22).
3. They preached the gospel, 1 Cor. 15:1-5 (Rom. 1:15-16).
a. “He commanded us to preach to the people” (Acts 10:42).
b. Good news of salvation from sin, kingdom of God, eternal hope.
c. God's method of saving sinners, 1 Cor. 1:21. (Gospel preaching identifies sin and the Savior for the sinner.)
d. Entrusted with the gospel, 1 Thess. 2:4; 2 Cor. 4:5, 7.
e. Commissioned to preach, baptize, teach, Mark 16:15.
f. They obeyed the Lord's commission, Mk. 16:15, 20; Lk. 24:47.
4. They had a moral obligation to preach the gospel, 1 Cor. 9:16.
I. THE APOSTLES' PREACHING IN THE BOOK OF ACTS.
A. They Preached the Apostles' Doctrine, Acts 2:42; 1 Thess. 1:5.
1. "By the Holy Spirit sent from heaven", 1 Pet. 1:12.
a. Power (1 Thess. 1:5): Confirming signs, 1 Cor. 2:4; 2 Cor. 12:12.
b. The Holy Spirit (1 Thess. 1:5): Revelation and inspiration (Jno. 16:13; Matt. 10:19-20).
c. Much assurance (1 Thess. 1:5): Conviction (credible and true).
* 2. Lesson: When we preach apostles' doctrine we preach heaven's message. All others are counterfeit. Gal. 1:8
B. They Preached the Word.
1. Word of the Lord (gospel), Acts 8:25; 14:7, 21, 25; 15:35, 36; 16:10.
2. Word of God, Acts 13:5; 17:13 (16:6).
3. Preaching the word ≅ Preaching Christ, Acts 8:4-5 (11:19-20).
4. Gospel of the grace of God, Acts 20:24 (word of His grace, 20:32).
* 5. Lesson: God communicates to us through His word. We must hear it and obey it. 1 Cor. 14:37
C. They Preached Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 1:23; 2:2; Col. 1:28), Acts 8:5, 35; 9:20 (the Son of God); 17:18.
1. The Christ: Jehovah's Anointed, Acts 5:42; 17:3 (Psa. 2:2).
2. The name of Jesus Christ, Acts 4:7-10.
a. His power, authority, Acts 8:12.
b. Boldly called on Him as their source of authority, Acts 9:27.
c. Sin is removed from believers by His power, Acts 10:43.
3. The Lord Jesus, Acts 11:20 (Master, Ruler).
a. Jesus was ordained by God to be Judge of all, Acts 10:42.
b. Living and dead: Implies His power over death (Jno. 5:21; 28-29).
* 4. Lesson: Jesus is our Master. We must honor and serve Him. Col. 3:23-24
D. They Preached Forgiveness of Sins through Jesus, Acts 13:38 (42).
1. Preached about sin, repentance and remission, Lk. 24:47.
2. Preached the plan of salvation, Acts 2:37-38; 8:12; 10:47-48 (Mk. 16:15-16).
a. Remission of sins, Acts 2:38.
b. The culmination of saving faith, Acts 16:30-34.
c. Call on Christ for His power to wash away sins, Acts 22:16.
* 3. Lesson: Preaching that does not address sin and does not explain God's remedy for sin is not Bible preaching. 2 Tim. 4:2
E. They Preached the Kingdom of God (cf. Acts 1:6-7).
1. Things about the kingdom, Acts 8:12 (king, citizenship, etc.).
2. Preached its presence, Acts 20:25 (28); 28:31. (Lk. 17:21; Col. 1:13)
3. Lesson: No future kingdom on earth. 1 Cor. 15:23-26
F. They Preached God, Our Creator and Sustainer.
1. To idolaters they preached the repudiation of idols to honor the One, true, living God, Acts 14:15-17.
2. To philosophers and skeptics that they can know the "unknown God" they tried to honor, Acts 17:24-29.
* 3. Lesson: Man does not make God; He made us. Trust Him, obey Him. We are accountable to Him. He will judge us. Acts 17:30-31
G. They Preached Human Existence Beyond the Grave.
1. Jesus and the resurrection, Acts 17:18 (1 Cor. 15:14, 19-20).
2. Judgment and repentance from sin, Acts 17:30-31; 20:21.
* 3. Lesson: This life is not all there is to our existence. Job 14:14
H. They Preached the Whole Counsel of God, Acts 20:27.
1. Entire plans, purposes and intentions of God; His will for us.
2. They "kept back nothing that was helpful", Acts 20:20.
* 3. Lesson: Give me the Bible; All of it! 2 Tim. 4:2
Conclusion
1. God's purpose for preaching is to bring sinners to faith so they will call on Him and be saved, Rom. 10:13-15. (1 Cor. 1:21)
2. Still, only a remnant of mankind believes the apostles' report, Rom. 10:16-17.
3. Be sure you "endure sound doctrine" (2 Tim. 4:3). Demand gospel preaching. Believe gospel preaching. Obey gospel preaching. Uphold gospel preaching.
