Noah's Faith
Intro.
1. Noah’s story is very familiar: Flood and God’s judgment of sin.
2. Noah’s faith stands out, Heb. 11:7 (Noah: “To comfort, rest," Gen. 5:28-29).
a. Rest from sin, Gen. 5:29; 6:3, 8-9.
b. Comfort of God’s covenant in the rainbow, Gen. 9:8-17.
c. Comforting example of justification by faith, Heb. 11:6-7.
3. Noah had remarkable faith, which serves as a pattern for our faith, Heb. 12:1-2.
I. NOAH HAD GREAT FAITH IN AN UNBELIEVING WORLD.
A. Noah’s World and Ours.
1. Lust in the heart, Gen. 6:2 (1 John 2:15-16).
2. Evil hearts caused evil lives, 6:5-6; Moral depravity (Rom. 1:21).
3. Violence, oppression, and corruption, 6:11-12.
4. Takes great faith to constantly face the pressures of a corrupt society and remain pure, Phil. 2:15-16; 1:27-28.
-With God’s grace we can do it, Gen. 6:8; 2 Tim. 2:1.
II. NOAH HAD GREAT FAITH TO PREACH A MESSAGE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, 2 Pet. 2:5.
A. He Preached About Unseen Things, Gen. 6:17 (Heb. 11:7).
1. The gospel salvation we preach (Gal. 1:11-12), 1 Cor. 2:7-9.
2. Jesus and our eternal reward, 1 Pet. 1:5-9.
B. He Preached Righteous Living, Titus 2:11-12; Rom. 13:13-14. (cf. MDR, Matt. 19:6, 9)
C. We Must Preach God’s Word, 2 Tim. 4:2.
1. Be skilled in the word of righteousness, Heb. 5:13-14.
2. Like Noah, we may see little results; Persevere (Isa. 55:11).
3. Faith in God, His truth, its power (Rom. 1:16; 1 John 5:4).
III. NOAH HAD GREAT FAITH TO COMPLETE AN ENORMOUS TASK, Gen. 6:14-16.
A. He Did Everything God Commanded Him, Gen. 6:22.
1. Moved with godly fear, Heb. 11:7 (Eccl. 12:13).
2. Size of ark: 450 ft. x 75 ft. x 45 ft. (over 1 mil. cubic ft.); 500+ railroad stock cars.
3. Not a ship builder (farmer, Gen. 5:29; 9:20: “And Noah, the husbandman, began and planted a vineyard.”[1]).
-Remember: “Experts built the Titanic; Amateurs built the ark.”
4. We can do everything God commands us, Matt. 7:21; Heb. 5:9 (Phil. 4:13, strength of Christ; grace of God; 1 Cor. 15:10).
-Moved with godly fear and guarded by faith (1 Pet. 1:3-5).
B. Meet Each Day with Faith, Heb. 10:35-39.
1. To overcome temptations, 1 Cor. 10:12-13.
2. To endure present trials, James 1:2-4.
3. To teach the gospel, 2 Tim. 2:2.
4. To be faithful parents, spouses, and neighbors.
Conclusion
1. Like Noah, you can escape the old world of sin and be saved from sin’s corruption and death, 1 Pet. 3:18-21.
a. God waited while ark being built; Then the flood came, 3:20.
b. God is longsuffering now, but judgment is coming, 2 Pet. 3:9-10.
2. Like Noah, hear and obey God to be saved by grace through faith, Heb. 11:6-7.
