Scripture Reading: Genesis 6:5-14

Noah's Faith

Intro.

1.  Noah’s story is very familiar: Flood and God’s judgment of sin.

2.  Noah’s faith stands out, Heb. 11:7 (Noah: “To comfort, rest," Gen. 5:28-29).

  a.  Rest from sin, Gen. 5:29; 6:3, 8-9.

  b.  Comfort of God’s covenant in the rainbow, Gen. 9:8-17.

  c.  Comforting example of justification by faith, Heb. 11:6-7.

3.  Noah had remarkable faith, which serves as a pattern for our faith, Heb. 12:1-2.

I.  NOAH HAD GREAT FAITH IN AN UNBELIEVING WORLD.

  A.  Noah’s World and Ours.

    1.  Lust in the heart, Gen. 6:2 (1 John 2:15-16).

    2.  Evil hearts caused evil lives, 6:5-6; Moral depravity (Rom. 1:21).

    3.  Violence, oppression, and corruption, 6:11-12.

    4.  Takes great faith to constantly face the pressures of a corrupt society and remain pure, Phil. 2:15-16; 1:27-28.

-With God’s grace we can do it, Gen. 6:8; 2 Tim. 2:1.

II.  NOAH HAD GREAT FAITH TO PREACH A MESSAGE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, 2 Pet. 2:5.

  A.  He Preached About Unseen Things, Gen. 6:17 (Heb. 11:7).

    1.  The gospel salvation we preach (Gal. 1:11-12), 1 Cor. 2:7-9.

    2.  Jesus and our eternal reward, 1 Pet. 1:5-9.

  B.  He Preached Righteous Living, Titus 2:11-12; Rom. 13:13-14. (cf. MDR, Matt. 19:6, 9)

  C.  We Must Preach God’s Word, 2 Tim. 4:2.

    1.  Be skilled in the word of righteousness, Heb. 5:13-14.

    2.  Like Noah, we may see little results; Persevere (Isa. 55:11).

    3.  Faith in God, His truth, its power (Rom. 1:16; 1 John 5:4).

III.  NOAH HAD GREAT FAITH TO COMPLETE AN ENORMOUS TASK, Gen. 6:14-16.

  A.  He Did Everything God Commanded Him, Gen. 6:22.

    1.  Moved with godly fear, Heb. 11:7 (Eccl. 12:13).

    2.  Size of ark: 450 ft. x 75 ft. x 45 ft. (over 1 mil. cubic ft.); 500+ railroad stock cars.

    3.  Not a ship builder (farmer, Gen. 5:29; 9:20: “And Noah, the husbandman, began and planted a vineyard.”[1]).

-Remember: “Experts built the Titanic; Amateurs built the ark.”

    4.  We can do everything God commands us, Matt. 7:21; Heb. 5:9 (Phil. 4:13, strength of Christ; grace of God; 1 Cor. 15:10).

-Moved with godly fear and guarded by faith (1 Pet. 1:3-5).

  B.  Meet Each Day with Faith, Heb. 10:35-39.

    1.  To overcome temptations, 1 Cor. 10:12-13.

    2.  To endure present trials, James 1:2-4.

    3.  To teach the gospel, 2 Tim. 2:2.

    4.  To be faithful parents, spouses, and neighbors.
