The Kingdom Has Come
Intro.
1. Luke uses “kingdom” 45 times. He portrays Jesus as fulfilling the prophetic pronouncements of the Messiah’s kingdom, Lk. 12:31-32.
2. Luke does not view the kingdom as:
a. Postponed due to the Jewish rejection of Christ.
b. An apocalyptic kingdom with Christ reigning on the earth for 1,000 years.
c. A kingdom inhabiting a renovated, purified earth (2 Pet. 3:12-13).
3. Kingdom of God was preached (Lk. 8:1), was coming (11:2), it was near (21:31-33; “at hand,” Matt. 3:2; Mk. 1:15).
4. For Luke, the kingdom of prophecy is the kingdom of the gospel (the church), Matt. 16:18-19. (“Your kingdom come,” Lk. 11:2 – Fulfilled)
I. THE KING WOULD BE BORN OF A VIRGIN: THE KINGDOM HAS COME.
Ø Isaiah 7:14; 9:6-7 –Virgin bear a son; Throne of David—Luke 1:30-35
-Immanuel, Son of God.
-The kingdom has come-
II. THE KING ON HIS THRONE: THE KINGDOM HAS COME.
Ø 2 Sam. 7:13 –Throne, Sovereign Rule—Luke 1:32-33
Ø Psa. 2:6-7 –Power—Luke 22:67-70
Ø Psa. 110:1 –Exalted; Right hand of God—Luke 24:51 (Acts 2:33-36)
-The kingdom has come-
III. THE KINGDOM IS PREACHED: THE KINGDOM HAS COME.
Ø Isaiah 2:2-3 –Preached—Luke 4:43; 8:1; 9:2, 11, 60; 16:16
-Jesus sent to preach it, 4:43
-Gospel (glad tidings), 8:1; Associated with healing (souls), 9:2, 11
-Sent others to preach the kingdom, 9:2, 60
-Kingdom was preached since John, 16:16
-Preached to the nations beginning at Jerusalem, 24:47
-The kingdom has come-
IV. NATURE OF THE KINGDOM: THE KINGDOM HAS COME.
Ø Isaiah 2:4; 11:3-5, 6-9 –Peace, Righteousness, Unity, Knowledge—Not of this world, Luke 6:20; 17:20-21; 18:16-17
-The kingdom has come-
V. COMPOSED OF ALL NATIONS: THE KINGDOM HAS COME.
Ø Isaiah 11:10-12 –All People—Luke 13:18, 20
-The kingdom has come-
VI. WHEN THE KINGDOM WOULD COME.
Ø Daniel 2:44-45 –Time—Luke 2:1-2; 3:1-2; 9:27 (10:9, 11; 11:20)
-Rule of God, cf. Sign of His sovereign rule and power, Lk. 21:31-33 (25-28)
-The kingdom has come-
Conclusion
1. The kingdom word is the gospel (Lk. 8:10-11).
2. Planted in hearts, it bears good fruit (Lk. 8:15).
-The kingdom of God’s Son is the kingdom of prophecy into which sinners are transferred when converted to Christ, Col. 1:13.
3. Thus, the kingdom is “within you” (Lk. 17:20-21).
4. This is how the kingdom came and continues to be with us, Acts 1:6-8; 3:19-26.
-The church is the kingdom of prophecy, Acts 2:41, 47; Heb. 12:22-23, 28.
