Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 2:14-19

Where False Doctrine Leads

Intro.

1.  False doctrine results from not understanding Scriptures and leads people away from God, Matt. 22:29. Err: “to roam (from safety, truth, or virtue): --go astray, deceive, err, seduce, wander, be out of the way” (G4105).

  a.  Possible for any of us to be in/stray into error, Eph. 2:3; 1 Tim. 1:13.

  b.  Only the arrogant, self-righteous fool says otherwise.

2.  This does not mean we cannot know truth, identify error, rebuke it, and avoid it, John 5:38-39; Acts 17:11-12; Eph. 5:8.

3.  Shun (“keep away from,” avoid) base, empty talk, 2 Tim. 2:16.

  a.  False teaching is not benign, gentle, and harmless. It has deadly spiritual effects on its teachers, those who follow their teachings, and those influenced by their followers, 2 Pet. 2:1-3.

  b.  Error does not exhort people in the truth, 1 Thess. 2:3.

4.  Yet, some continue to see false doctrine as a non-issue.

  a.  They have trouble identifying it. (“Everybody is in error on something,” and, “nobody is 100% doctrinally pure.”)

  b.  Their solution is to agree to disagree on revealed truth.

  c.  That is not the Bible solution, 1 Cor. 1:10; Jude 3; Eph. 4:3-6.

5.  2 Tim. 2:16-19 exposes and explodes this false reasoning about false teaching by showing where error leads.

I.  FALSE DOCTRINE IS IDENTIFIABLE, 2 Tim. 2:15-16 (Detectable).

·  We can know truth from error (1 Cor. 4:6).

-Messages disguised as truth are profane and empty, infecting and destroying souls, 2:16.

·  False doctrine is contrasted with “the word of truth,” 2:15.

-Truth is identifiable, John 8:32; Eph. 3:3-4; 4:20-21.

-1 John 4:1, 6: Test implies standard (truth); Apostles’ doctrine.

-Gal. 1:6-9: Perverted gospel removes us from grace; accursed.

II.  FALSE DOCTRINE LEADS TO MORE UNGODLINESS, 2 Tim. 2:16.

·  False doctrine leads to further sin (impiety, wickedness).

-2 Cor. 11:3-4: False teaching corrupts (sin).

-Rev. 2:14-16: Moral and doctrinal compromise.

III.  FALSE DOCTRINE LEADS TO MORE FALSE DOCTRINE, 2 Tim. 2:17.

·  False doctrine spreads, Gal. 5:7-9.

-2 Tim. 3:13: Someone said, “Error does not stand still. It continues to work.” Unopposed, it spreads like cancer.

-Rev. 2:20-23: False, sinful teaching seduces others into sin and death.

IV.  FALSE DOCTRINE LEADS TO OVERTHROWN FAITH, 2 Tim. 2:18.

·  It matters what you believe, Matt. 7:21-23.

·  Falling away, 2 Pet. 3:16-18.

V.  FALSE DOCTRINE LEADS TO STRIFE, 2 Tim. 2:23.

·  Contend for the faith without being contentious, Jude 3.

·  To avoid error, do not begin to listen to it, and do not receive those who teach it (2 John 10-11).

VI. FALSE DOCTRINE LEADS AWAY FROM GOD AND HIS TRUTH TO LAWLESSNESS AND DEATH, 2 Tim. 2:19.

·  Error brings penalty it is due, Rom. 1:27.

·  Penalty is death (eternal), James 5:19-20.

Conclusion

1.   Search the Scriptures daily to see what is true and what is false, Acts 17:11. Then, hold fast to truth, 2 Tim. 1:13.

2.   Examine ourselves by truth to know if we are in the faith or reprobate, 2 Cor. 13:5. Then make necessary corrections for the sake of our souls.
