Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 4:12-19
Commit Your Soul to God
Intro.
1. We deposit valuables into the trusted care of others to prevent exposure to danger and loss ($, safe deposit box, security sys, etc.).
2. NT Christians were in danger, suffering for doing God’s will (1 Pet. 1:6; 2:12, 19; 3:13-17; 4:12, 14, 16, 19; 5:10).
3. They were commanded to commit (deposit) souls to God for safe-keeping, 1 Pet. 4:19.
4. What are we committing to God for safe-keeping? 2 Tim. 1:12
I. COMMIT YOUR SOUL TO GOD, 1 Pet. 4:19.
A. By Becoming a Christian, Acts 3:19.
1. Total surrender and complete rearranging of your life, cf. 1 Cor. 6:9-11; Phil. 3:5-8.
2. Unashamed commitment, Mark 8:34-38.
B. By Being a Faithful Christian With…
1. Your life (body and mind/heart), Rom. 12:1-2.
a. Doing good, 4:19 (Eph. 2:10; Heb. 13:20-21; Gal. 6:10).
b. Do good “as to a faithful Creator,” Col. 3:23.
c. Doing good may “put to silence” ignorance of the foolish, 1 Pet. 2:15 (12).
2. Your possessions, Luke 12:19-21 (15).
a. Do not trust in money … “uncertain,” 1 Tim. 6:17.
b. Use to do good, ready to give, willing to share; store up treasure in heaven, 1 Tim. 6:18-19.
c. First give ourselves to the Lord, 2 Cor. 8:1-5.
3. Your talents, Eccl. 9:10.
a. Passion, fervor, enthusiasm, zeal, Col. 3:23 (heartily: “out of the soul”); cf. John 2:17.
b. cf. Lukewarm Christians, Rev. 3:14-16.
II. COMMIT YOUR CHILDREN TO GOD, 1 Sam. 1:11; Judg. 13:8.
A. Bring the Little Ones to Jesus, Matt. 19:13-15.
1. Teach them…show them…lead them, (Deut. 4:9-10; 11:18-21).
2. Worship with them…pray with them…pray for them…
3. The church cannot rear your child…you must (Eph. 6:4; Tit. 2:4).
III. COMMIT YOUR FUTURE TO GOD, Matt. 6:33-34.
A. Faith in God’s Committed Control of All Things, cf. James 4:13-15.
B. A Heart Turned Heavenward, Luke 12:29-34 (Col. 3:1-4).
C. A Life that Continues to Do God’s Will, James 4:16-17 (Heb. 10:36, 39).
Conclusion
1. 1 Pet. 5:10: The God of all grace...
a. Has called us to His eternal glory: Will you follow His call?
b. By Jesus Christ: Will you trust the purposes of God in Christ?
c. After you have suffered a while: Will you stay with God through your trials?
d. Will perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you: Trust God to secure you.
2. What have you committed to the Lord? 1 Pet. 4:16-19
3. God’s judgment compels us to give our souls to God.
4. God will keep (guard for himself) your soul unto (until) “that Day” (day of reward), 2 Tim. 1:12; 4:8.
