Scripture Reading:  John 5:16-30

 

"All Things Delivered to the Son"

 

Intro.

1.  Son submitted Himself to the Father’s will – Jno. 14:28; 6:38 (Phil. 2:6-7).

2.  Matt. 11:27Delivered (paradidomi):  “to give over into (one’s) power or use…to deliver to one something to keep, use, take care of, manage.”

“All things necessary to the full execution of his office as Lord of the kingdom were entrusted to Jesus, but for the present only potentially. The actual investiture of authority did not take place until the glorification of Jesus (#Mt 28:18 Col 1:16-19 Heb 1:8). The authority thus delivered shall be eventually returned again (#1Co 15:28).”  (McGarvey, The Fourfold Gospel, 289)

3.  Our faith is strengthened & our hearts emboldened as we ponder the things that God delivered to His Son, Jesus.

 

I.  ALL THINGS NECESSARY…

  A.  To Execute His work as Savior of the World – Gal. 4:4 (Matt. 1:21).

  B.  To Execute His Work as “the Prophet” from God – Acts 3:22-26.

  C.  To Execute His Work as High Priest over the House of God – Heb. 5:4-6.

  D.  To Execute His Work as King of His Kingdom–Lk. 1:31-33; Mk. 9:1.

 

II.  THE FATHER GAVE THE SON THINGS…

  A.  That Man Could Not Give Rom. 11:33-36 (1 Cor. 2:5).

  B.  That Only the Son of God Could Receive Col. 1:14-20.

     -(Preeminence, fullness, means of reconciliation)

    1.  Because He is deity (has seen God) – Jno. 1:1-3, 18.

    2.  Because He and the Father are one – Jno. 10:30 (cf. 17:5).

  C.  That Enable the Salvation of Sinners – Matt. 11:28-30; 2 Tim. 1:10.

 

III.  THINGS DELIVERED TO THE SON INCLUDE:  (Eph. 1:10)

  A.  Grace Jno. 1:14-18.

    1.  The Way to the Father – Jno. 14:6 (not by “law”, 1:17).

    2.  The source of grace for us – 1:16-17; 2 Tim. 1:9-10.

    3.  The revelation of grace – 1:18; cf. Tit. 2:11.

  B.  Truth Jno. 1:14, 17-18.

    1.  The Truth that directs us to the Father – Jno. 14:6.

    2.  The Truth that frees us from sin – Jno. 8:31-32.

    3.  Jesus has declared (revealed) the Father (His truth) (cf. Heb. 1:2).

  C.  HonorJno. 5:23.

    1.  Confess, praise & celebrate – 1 Jno. 2:23.

    2.  Because the Son does the same work as the Father – Jno. 5:16-20.

    3.  Because He accomplished redemption – Jno. 17:4-5; Phil. 2:9-11.

  D.  LifeJno. 5:26, 21 (Jno. 11:25-26; 14:6).

    1.  Spiritual life (redemption) – Jno. 5:21; 25-26 (Eph. 2:5).

    2.  Physical life (resurrection) – Jno. 5:28-29 (1 Cor. 15:21-22).

  E.  JudgmentJno. 5:22, 27, 29.

    1.  Make separation & render justice:

      a.  By His word (believers & unbelievers separated) – Jno. 9:39.

      b.  At the last day – Matt. 25:31-32 (Acts 17:31).

  F.  Word of God Jno. 1:1, 14.

    1.  Jesus speaks the Father’s will – Jno. 8:26-28 (Heb. 1:2).

    2.  His words reveal the Father to mankind – Matt. 11:27.

    3.  His words contain eternal life – Jno. 12:50 (Matt. 7:21).

  G.  All Authority Matt. 28:18; Jno. 17:1-2 All jurisdiction:

    1.  To save (as Lamb of God) – Jno. 17:1-2 (Rev. 5:8-9).

    2.  To rule (as King) – Psa. 110:1-2 (Jno. 18:36; 1 Tim. 6:15-16).

    3.  To serve (as High Priest) – Psa. 110:4 (Heb. 8:1-2).

    4.  To speak for God (as Prophet) – Matt. 17:5; Heb. 1:2.

    5.  To execute judgment Psa. 110:5-7; Jno. 5:27, 30; 12:48.

 

Conclusion 

1.  1 Cor. 15:24-28 – At the end of time, when all is accomplished & every foe vanquished, the Son’s servitude will blend into the eternal glory of Almighty God.

2.  Matt. 11:28 - We must come to Jesus, submit to His authority by obeying His truth, & thereby obtain grace, spiritual life & the hope of sharing in His eternal glory in the day of judgment.
