Scripture Reading: 2 Peter 1:12-15

"Stir You Up by Reminding You"

Intro.

1. Memory is a great blessing from God; yet, we need reminders because our memory fails, Mk. 8:18 (alarms, notes, Memorial Day, Lord’s Supper, Lk. 22:19, etc.).

2. The object of the reminder is to get us to remember and then act based on what we remember; to alter or improve ourselves.

3. 2 Pet. 1:12-15: Peter wanted Christians to have a constant reminder so they would remember to grow and secure their calling (1:5-11).

  a.  His objective: “To stir you up by reminding you,” 2 Pet. 1:13.

  b.  The aim of this sermon: To stir us up by remembering so that we act in harmony with the will of God.

 

I.  DO YOU REMEMBER THE DAY OF YOUR CONVERSION?

  A.  The Day of Your Salvation, Acts 22:16; 2:47.

    1.  A day when you had an active, obedient faith, Mk. 16:15-16; Heb. 5:8-9; Jas. 2:17, 24.

    2.  A day when you trusted in the power of God, Col. 2:12.

    3.  A day of commitment and dedication, Matt. 11:28-30.

    4.  A day of great joy and anticipation, Acts 8:39; 16:33-34.

    5.  A day of conversion from sin and death to righteousness and life, Rom. 6:4, 17-18.

  B.  As you Remember be Stirred Up…

    1.  To keep your faith active and strong (Heb. 3:14; 10:36, 39).

    2.  To remain a dedicated, devoted disciple (Lk. 6:40, 46).

    3.  To never lose the joy of salvation (Psa. 51:12).

 

II.  DO YOU REMEMBER THE DAY YOU WERE MARRIED?

  A.  Your Wedding Day was the Day God Joined you Together (Matt. 19:6; Rom. 7:2).

    1.  Day of covenant-making with vows before God & men Mal. 2:14

    2.  Day of leaving and cleaving, Gen. 2:23-24.

    3.  Day of love, loyalty and honor, Eph. 5:25, 28.

  B.  As you Remember be Stirred Up...

    1.  To be faithful to your vows (Heb. 13:4). In 2008, 70% Americans view divorce as morally acceptable. (Gallup’s 2008 Values and Beliefs Survey)

    2.  To honor your mate as a blessing from God (1 Pet. 3:7; Prov. 18:22)

    3.  To love your mate as yourself (Matt. 7:12; Eph. 5:28-29).

 

III. DO YOU REMEMBER THE DAY YOUR CHILD WAS BORN?

  A.  The Birthday of Your Child.

    1.  A day of pain and great joy, Jno. 16:21; Psa. 127:3.

       -Nothing would ever be the same.

    2.  A day of responsibility as parents (a new life to feed, to teach, to nurture in the fear of the Lord), Jgs. 13:8; Eph. 6:4.

    3.  A day of wonder mingled with fear.

  B.  As you Remember be Stirred Up…

    1.  To not neglect to teach them God’s word (Deut. 6:7).

    2.  To fully discipline (teach and correct), Prov. 13:24; 19:18; 23:13-14

    3.  To set good examples before them and not exasperate them (provoke to wrath), Eph. 6:4.

 

IV. DO YOU REMEMBER THE DAY JESUS DIED?

    (Someone says, “How can I – I wasn’t there!”) With eyes of faith (Mk. 8:18).

  A.  God Expects You to Remember it, 1 Cor. 11:24-26.

    1.  It was a day of shameful sin and suffering, Matt. 27:26-31.

    2.  It was a day of darkness and death, Matt. 27:45-50.

    3.  It was a day of sacrifice and salvation, 1 Pet. 2:24; Heb. 5:8-9.

  B.  As you Remember be Stirred Up…

    1.  To have the mind of Christ (Phil. 2:5-8).

    2.  To be a living sacrifice to God (Rom. 12:1).

    3.  Suffer for doing what is good (1 Pet. 3:17-18).

 

Conclusion

1.  Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel” (2 Tim. 2:8).

2.  Remembering that Jesus lives stirs us up to “live for righteousness” (1 Pet. 2:24-25).
