Marriage, Divorce and Remarriage

(The Bible Pattern v. A False Pattern)

Part 1

Intro.

1. We will answer to God for our marriages (Matt. 19:6; Heb. 13:4).
2. This subject is understandable, Jno. 8:31-32; 7:17; Eph. 3:3-5; 2 Tim. 2:15.
3. It is safe and needful to speak often of these things, Phil. 3:1; 2 Pet. 1:12.

I. BIBLE PATTERN FOR MARRIAGE, DIVORCE AND REMARRIAGE.
  A.  All men are under one marriage law (Gen. 2:22-24; Heb. 13:4).
  B.  One man and one woman for life (Matt. 19:4-6; Rom. 7:2; 1 Cor. 7:39).
  C.  Only one exception for approved divorce and remarriage (Matt. 19:6, 9; 1 Cor. 7:10-11).

-Some brethren say this teaching "forbids marriage" and "commands divorce".

-They offer us "another" gospel -- A false pattern which perverts the gospel of Christ.

-They call the foregoing the "doctrine of demons" (1 Tim. 4:1-3).  They are not accurate with this charge, as we shall see from the scriptures.

II. A FALSE PATTERN FOR MARRIAGE, DIVORCE AND REMARRIAGE.
  A.  "Every marriage is good" (1 Cor. 7:2).
  B.  "It is better to marry than to burn" (1 Cor. 7:9).
  C.  "Remain in the marriage in which you were called" (1 Cor. 7:24).

III. WHY THIS PATTERN IS FALSE.
  A.  "Every marriage is good" (1 Cor. 7:2).
-But, some marriages are not "good" (Matt. 19:9; Mk. 6:17-18; Rom. 7:1-3).
  B.  "It is better to marry than to burn" (1 Cor. 7:9).
-But, some marriages are not "better" (1 Cor. 7:11; cf. Ezra 9:1-2; 10:3, 10).
  C.  "Remain in the marriage in which you were called" (1 Cor. 7:24).
-But, one cannot "remain" in an unlawful marriage (Mk. 6:17-18; Rom. 7:3).

Conclusion

1.  While we cannot bind where the Lord has not bound, neither can we loose where He has not done so (Matt. 16:19; Gal. 1:6-9).

2.  In Part 2 we will consider some false conclusions being used to defend this false pattern for marriage, divorce and remarriage.
