Scripture Reading:  Isaiah 12

Spiritual and Eternal Life

 

Intro.

1.    Jno. 1:4 – In Christ, life is found (Jno. 14:6) – Jno. 4:14.

2.    We possess life in Christ while our hope is on eternal life.

 

I.    SPIRITUAL LIFE IS AVAILABLE TO ALL – Eph. 2:1.  

   A.   Spiritual Life Means Freedom from the Death of Sin – Eph. 2:1.

      1.    Forgiveness of sins – Col. 2:13 [sin alienates from the “life of God” – Eph. 4:18].

      2.    Newness of life (a new kind of life) – Rom. 6:4.

      3.    Alive from spiritual death – Rom. 6:13.

   B.   Spiritual Life Means Fellowship with God – Eph. 2:4-6.

      1.    Alive to God in Christ – Rom. 6:11; Live with Christ – 6:8.

      2.    No condemnation (in Christ) – Rom. 8:1-2.

   C.   Spiritual Life is Characterized by Sanctification (holiness) – Rom. 6:21-22.

      1.    Spiritually minded -- life & peace – Rom. 8:6-7.

      2.    The spirit is alive because of righteousness – Rom. 8:10.

      3.    Put to death the deeds of flesh -- Live – Rom. 8:12-13.

   D.  Spiritual Life is Obtained through the Gospel.

      1.    The Spirit, via the NT, gives life – 2 Cor. 3:6 (Jno. 6:63).

      2.    The gospel saves (spiritual life) – Rom. 1:16.

   E.   Spiritual Life can be Forfeited.

      1.    Disqualified if not disciplined; can fall – 1 Cor. 9:27; 10:12.

      2.    Calling & election is unsure if we are not diligent – 2 Pet. 1:10-11.

 

II.   ETERNAL LIFE IS PROMISED TO THE FAITHFUL.

   A.   Defined:  Glory, Honor, Immortality & Peace - Rom. 2:7, 10 (opposite of indignation, wrath, tribulation & anguish – 2:8-9). 

      1.    In this world we have tribulation (Jno. 16:33); In the heavens we have eternal rest & bliss – 2 Cor. 5:1-4 (Rev. 14:13).

      2.    Realized in the age to come – Mk. 10:30 (Lk. 18:30).

      3.    Ready to be revealed in the last time – 1 Pet. 1:5.

   B.   We Must Lay Hold of Eternal Life (don’t yet have it actually).

      1.    “Take possession of; to attain, to seize upon” – 1 Tim. 6:12, 19.

      2.    By diligent faithfulness we gain entrance into the eternal kingdom – 2 Pet. 1:10-11; Jas. 1:12 (endure).

      3.    Enter into life by keeping the commands of God – Matt. 19:17.

   C.   We Have Eternal Life – 1 Jno. 5:11-13.  (Have it potentially)

      1.    We have eternal life as our sure hope – Titus 1:2; 3:7 (Heb. 6:17-19).

         -Rom. 8:24-25 – Not yet possessed, for it is hoped for!

      2.    We have eternal life now in promise – 1 Jno. 2:25 (cf. Matt. 19:29; 25:46) – inheritance.

      3.    We have eternal life by faith – Jno. 3:14-16; cf. 6:54, 68; 10:27-28.

         -The end (purpose, goal, result) of our faith – Rom. 6:22-23; 1 Pet. 1:9; Jude 21.

 

Conclusion

1.    Jno. 10:28 – Christ Jesus gives spiritual and eternal life to all who hear His voice & follow Him (“…whosoever lives and believes in Me shall never die” – Jno. 11:26).

2.    Will you live in death (1 Tim. 5:6), or die alive in Christ, & live eternally in heaven?! – 2 Cor. 4:17-18
