Scripture Reading: Luke 17:20-25

The Kingdom Has Come

Intro.

1.  Luke uses “kingdom” 45 times. He portrays Jesus as fulfilling the prophetic pronouncements of the Messiah’s kingdom, Lk. 12:31-32.

2.  Luke does not view the kingdom as:

  a.    Postponed due to the Jewish rejection of Christ.

  b.    An apocalyptic kingdom with Christ reigning on the earth for 1,000 years.

  c.    A kingdom inhabiting a renovated, purified earth (2 Pet. 3:12-13).

3.  Kingdom of God was preached (Lk. 8:1), was coming (11:2), it was near (21:31-33; “at hand,” Matt. 3:2; Mk. 1:15).

4.  For Luke, the kingdom of prophecy is the kingdom of the gospel (the church), Matt. 16:18-19. (“Your kingdom come,” Lk. 11:2 – Fulfilled)

2.  Planted in hearts, it bears good fruit (Lk. 8:15).

-The kingdom of God’s Son is the kingdom of prophecy into which sinners are transferred when converted to Christ, Col. 1:13.

3.  Thus, the kingdom is “within you” (Lk. 17:20-21).

4.  This is how the kingdom came and continues to be with us, Acts 1:6-8; 3:19-26.

-The church is the kingdom of prophecy, Acts 2:41, 47; Heb. 12:22-23, 28.
