Scripture Reading: Isaiah 61:1-3

Good News

 

Intro.

1.  Good news is welcomed because it refreshes and invigorates, Prov. 25:25 (15:30).

2.  Messiah preaches good tidings that enliven the soul, Isa. 61:1-3.

3.  Gospel (euangelion): “A good message,” to be preached to the world, Mk. 16:15; Matt. 28:19.

 

I.  THE GOSPEL IS GOOD NEWS OF SALVATION, Eph. 1:13.

  A.  Salvation from Sin in Jesus Christ, Acts 4:12.

    1.  God’s power to save, Rom. 1:16; 1 Thess. 2:13.

    2.  “Rescue or safety” – (deliver, health, salvation, save, saving); Rom. 3:23; 6:23.

  B.  Peace through Jesus Christ, Acts 10:36.

    1.  Sin’s conflict can be removed.

    2.  This peace prophesied and preached, Isa. 57:19-21; Eph. 2:14-18.

    3.  By Christ...by the blood of His cross, Col. 1:19-20.

 

II.  THE GOSPEL IS GOOD NEWS OF GOD’S GRACE, Titus 2:11.

  A.  Good News of God’s Grace, Col. 1:6 (Acts 20:24, 32).

    1.  Acceptable year of the Lord, Isa. 61:2. Favor, grace, Isa. 49:8; 2 Cor. 6:1-2.

    2.  Rich mercy, love and grace, Eph. 2:4-9 (Rom. 4:1-5).

  B.  Good News that Grace is Accessed by Faith, Rom. 5:1-2 (1:16-17)

    1.  Not by law keeping (require perfection), Eph. 2:9.

    2.  By obedient faith (trusts in God to save), Heb. 3:18-19; 4:2, 6.

 

III.  THE GOSPEL IS GOOD NEWS OF GOD’S TRUTH, Col. 1:5, 6.

  A.  Truth has Power to Free Us from the Darkness of Ignorance, Jno. 8:31-32; Eph. 4:17-21.

    1.  Light of truth leads us to God’s dwelling place, Psa. 43:3.

    2.  Truth preserves us against evils, Psa. 40:11-12.

    3.  We must obey the truth that has been preached, Gal. 3:1-2; 1 Pet. 1:22-25.

 

IV. THE GOSPEL IS GOOD NEWS OF HOPE LAID UP IN HEAVEN, Col. 1:5.

  A.  Our Hope Reaches into the Very Presence of God, Heb. 6:18-20.

    1.  Our hope in Christ is not in this life, 1 Cor. 15:19-20.

      a.  Saved in hope, Rom. 8:24-25.

      b.  Living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 1 Pet. 1:3-5.

    2.  We persevere and “rejoice in hope of the glory of God” (Rom. 5:2), Heb. 3:6.

 

Conclusion

1.  The gospel of Christ is good news in every way.

2.  Who wouldn’t want the advantages and blessings of the good news of salvation, grace, truth and hope? Only those who do not believe.

3.  Do not be faithless, but believing. Obey the gospel now.
