Habits
R. J. Evans

It has been said that, “habits are like comfortable beds, easy to get into, but hard to get out of.” It has also been said that “habits are like cable, each day as we do something in a pattern, we intertwine one thread with another.” And, of course, as the threads are woven tightly together, a cable is formed. Using this analogy, we need to realize that on any particular day, the thread we added was probably too small to gain much of our attention. But, after many threads have been woven in, we discover that together they have become a practically unbreakable cable or rope.

So it is with habits. There are good habits and there are bad habits. Daily practices over the course of time become habits that are practically unbreakable-so be careful what you weave.

To illustrate the above, concerning a bad habit, ask someone who has developed a bad habit and has attempted to break it, i.e. the person who uses profanity, drinks alcohol, or takes drugs. It is my understanding that chain smoking is one of the most difficult of all habits to break.

But on the other hand, think of developing good habits. Think of how much good and positive results that are produced from these daily practices. Here are some suggestions or examples of good habits that we need to be incorporating into our daily lives.

DAILY Bible Reading. “Also day by day, from the first day until the last day, he read from the Book of the Law of God” (Neh. 8:18).

DAILY Bible Study. “These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11).

DAILY Prayer. “Lord, I have called daily upon You; I have stretched out my hands to You”  (Psa. 88:9).

DAILY Cross Bearing. “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Lk. 9:23).

DAILY Meditation. “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night”  (Psa. 1:2).

DAILY Exhortation. “But exhort one another daily, while it is called ‘Today,’ lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin” (Heb. 3:19).

DAILY Teaching. “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ” (Acts 5:42).

DAILY Growth. “So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily” (Acts 16:5). “And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:47).

Do you want to become more like Jesus? Do you want to consistently grow and become stronger in the Lord? Then consider carefully the good daily activities just mentioned, and begin a life filled with good habits.

"There Is No God"
Joe R. Price

The late physicist Stephen Hawking did not believe in God. ”’Do I have faith?’ he writes in Brief Answers to the Big Questions (his final book, jrp). ‘We are each free to believe what we want, and it’s my view that the simplest explanation is that there is no God. No one created the universe, and no one directs our fate’” (“‘There is no God,’ Stephen Hawking writes in final book,” Gael F. Cooper, cnet.com).

Mr. Hawking was a materialist. He explored and explained physical phenomena. He did not allow for the possibility of anything except a physical world. He rejected humans are dual beings of both flesh and spirit (Eccl. 12:7). He discarded belief in a Creator in whose image we were created. To him, no God gave us life and no God sustains us.

Hawking relied on the physical forces of the world and the laws of physics that explain them (like gravity). What was his answer for how these forces came into existence? Hawking believed in spontaneous creation, not by a supreme Creator, but by the very laws of nature that hold together the universe. “Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist,” Hawking writes in his recently published book, The Grand Design” (“Stephen Hawking Explains Spontaneous Creation in Discovery Channel Series,” Fionna Agamuoh, Christian Post, 8/4/2011). To him, the universe “popped into existence without violating the known laws of Nature,” and that “the discovery of these laws (origin and structure of the universe, jrp) is mankind’s greatest achievement” (Ibid).

And so, we have the genius fool. “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God’” (Psa. 14:1). Where is the spontaneous creation of which he wrote? And, from whence do physical forces originate? Evidence for a Supreme Creator is in the heavens themselves: “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork” (Psa. 19:1). Its precision, its power, its expanse screams from the heavens, “there is a God!” His invisible attributes are on full display in the heavens and in the earth (Rom. 1:20).

Ironically, Hawking believes there is other intelligent life in the universe. “There are forms of intelligent life out there,” he writes. “We need to be wary of answering back until we have developed a bit further” (“‘There Is No God,’ the Late Stephen Hawking Says in Final Book,” Michael Foust, christianheadlines.com). He rejects intelligent design by an intelligent creator, while believing matter spontaneously created the building blocks of intelligent life.

This is the “knowledge” our children face in classrooms from elementary through college. We must explain to them why God is real and the Bible is His word – no one else will!). The evidence for God is visible in this world’s design, including the laws He put into place to sustain it – and us (Acts 14:15-17; 17:24-25; Col. 1:17).

The existence of God does not contradict science (including physics). Nothing comes from nothing. Everything comes from something. Genesis 1 identifies God as the One with the intelligence and the power to spontaneously create everything, including the laws that govern their existence. All the earth should fear the Lord, “For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast” (Psa. 33:8-9). I suspect Mr. Hawking know that by now. (Do you?) Do not be afraid of nor be drawn astray by what is falsely called knowledge (1 Tim. 6:20-21).

NOTEWORTHY NEWS
(Current events in the light of Scripture)

Market Volatility
Joe R. Price

This week has seen U.S. and world stock markets fluctuate dramatically. Investors are always trying to read the tea leaves to know when, where and how much to invest. That’s really nothing new. History records lows and highs during which money is lost and gained, profit and loss is the essence of business.

Jesus teaches us not to lay up for yourselves treasures on the earth (Matt. 6:19). He is not telling us planning for retirement is wrong. He is not telling us having a savings account is evil. He is telling us not to set our affections, our aims, and our goals on material things (Matt. 6:21). Natural deterioration occurs and unexpected events (like thieves) ruin our plans. Shaping our life according to material things is futile and finally, eternally fatal.

Instead, we are to lay up for ourselves treasures in heaven (Matt. 6:20-21). When our heart is set on things above we are able to arrange our lives, including business affairs, investments, etc. with respect for God’s will.

This is what James exhorts in James 3:14-17. He addresses folks interested in business and its profit (nothing evil in that). Focus with me on verse 14: “whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” Stock market swings may or may not indicate future economic good or trouble. We do not know. So, whatever comes in business – and in life – we say, “if the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that” (Jas. 4:15).

Our life is not dependent upon material gain or loss. It is dependent upon having the faith to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, confident that “all these things” we need in life will be provided by our loving and caring Father (Matt. 6:32-33). Do not be deterred by unknown and unforeseen forces; God will take care of you. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matt. 6:34).
